CHAPTER SIX

Does God Still Love Me?

"The saddest part is that it took more than ten years to realize that all I was doing was running from the one who really loved me."

hen you've had an abortion, you want ¾ you need ¾ to know if God still loves you.  It’s just as when we were children and broke our mother's most valued possession by our childish carelessness (or perhaps by our disobedient romping through the house).  We needed to feel her arms around us as a tangible declaration that she still loved us in spite of what we had done.  That's what we are seeking when we ask, "Does God still love me?"  You've "broken" something precious to God.  It  can't be mended.  It can't be replaced.  What will God's reaction be?  Will He love us in spite of our disobedient action?

How does God feel about abortion?

An abortion turns our thoughts toward God and His feelings on this issue.  Why?  Because we have realized that abortion kills an innocent human life, a life God had some part in beginning.  We wonder how He will view our part in ending that life.   It's good to think about God's reaction to abortion.  God has much to say about life in the womb.  God gives life:

Behold, children are a gift of the Lord; The fruit of the womb is a reward.  (Psalm 127:3)

And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.  (Genesis 1:27)

Thou alone art the Lord. Thou hast made the heavens, The heaven of heavens with all their host, and The earth and all that is on it, The seas and all that is in them.  Thou dost give life to all of them And the heavenly host bows down before Thee.  (Nehemiah 9:6)

Who among all these does not know That the hand of the Lord has done this, In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?  (Job 12:9-10)

The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.  (Job 33:4)

Know that the Lord Himself is God; it is He who has made us and not we ourselves.  (Psalm 100:3a)

Thy hands fashioned and made me altogether.  (Job 10:8a)

The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all life and breath and all things.  (Acts 17:24-25)

God determines the length of our lives:

The Lord kills and makes alive.  (1 Samuel 2:6a)

Since [man's] days are determined, The number of his months is with Thee, And his limits Thou hast set so that he cannot pass.  (Job 14:5)

Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Thy book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.  (Psalm 139:16)

God hates abortion because it terminates a life He created.  We cut short God's plan for that life by taking it upon ourselves to determine when it should end.

Does God still love me?

One woman asked, "Does God sympathize with the terror one feels when faced with an unwanted pregnancy?"  Laura gives us a beautiful answer:  "Yes, I believe that the Lord looked at my heart.  He understood my pain when I desperately needed to feel loved ¾ although I made the wrong choice by being intimate with a boyfriend.  I believe He could understand why it happened.  I think He can see the denial, the lack of knowledge, etc.; but I believe that even if someone understood it all, He still forgives them freely when they repent."

As mentioned earlier, nothing surprises God.  He knew before the world began that you would have an abortion.  Does that surprise you?  It's true.  Job 34:21 tells us, "For His [God's] eyes are upon the ways of a man, And He sees all his steps."  That is not to say that God approves of what you did, or that He would not rather have seen you choose life ¾ or, if you are unmarried, to have chosen to avoid the sexual act which led to conceiving that life.  God hates abortion.  Proverbs 6:16-19 states six things that God finds abominable, one of which is, "hands that shed innocent blood."  God always hates sin.  But God loves you.  Remember that God created you and gave you life.  He loves you very much.

Be encouraged by these verses from the Bible regarding God's love for you:

But I [God] will not break off My lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in my faithfulness. (Psalm 89:33)

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies.  (Psalm 103:4)

I [God] have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.  (Jeremiah 31:3)

And my soul has been rejected from peace; I have forgotten happiness.  So I say, "My strength has perished, And so has my hope from the Lord." Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness.  Surely my soul remembers And is bowed down within me.  This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope.  The Lord's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; Great is Thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:17-23)

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 8:38-39)

Does God still love you?  Yes!

How does God show He still loves me?

It boggles the mind, doesn't it,  to think that after the wrong we have done, God still loves us.  Aren't you glad He does?  Our finite, mortal minds cannot begin to comprehend the love of God toward us.

One way God shows His love for us is recorded in Romans 5:8:  "But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."  God sent Christ to die in our place long before we knew we needed Him. God did this because He loves us and wanted to express that love.  In fact, no one can show greater love than to die for a fellow man (John 15:13; Romans 5:7).

Did you know God searches for us (Luke 19:10)?  That's another way He shows His love for us.  Luke 15:4-7 pictures God's searching love toward us by depicting a shepherd's love for his sheep.  The shepherd's love is so great for each individual sheep, that when one is lost from his flock of one hundred, he leaves the ninety-nine others to search for the lost sheep.  He searches until he finds it.  Then the shepherd lovingly and joyfully carries it back to the fold.  The passage ends, "I tell you that in the same manner, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance."  What a tremendous picture of God's love and concern for us!

Let's think for a moment why God searches for us.  First, we must be lost.  Second, we must be of great value to him.  Third, He must want to restore us to a proper relationship with himself (return us to the fold).

The Bible tells us we are lost and in need of a shepherd.  Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd (John 10:11).  He declares He has come to seek and to save that which is lost (Luke 19:10).

Why are we lost?

You are lost, just as every person on this earth is lost, because of sin.  "Sin" is the word God uses to designate the things we do that God tells us not to do as well as the things we don't do that God tells us to do.  In short, sin is doing something wrong.  Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."  Do you agree with that?  Do you agree you sinned when you had an abortion?  God says you did (Exodus 20:13, 23:7; Matthew 19:18; Romans 13:9a).  You see, abortion is not wrong because of how our experience affects us.  Abortion is wrong because God says it is wrong.  Each of us has sinned.  Sin is the reason we are lost.

We've already talked of the great value God places on you.  He created you.  He loves you.  He wants to restore you to a proper relationship with Himself.  This means God wants to forgive you for the wrongs ¾ the sins ¾ that you have done.  Why?  Because He loves you.  God's love for you and His desire to forgive you are so intricately interwoven that they can never be separated.
